(News Terupdate) - A magnitude 7.2 earthquake has rattled Aceh and its surrounding areas on the northern tip of Sumatra Island on early Wednesday, prompting a tsunami watch for the areas.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake struck at 5:15 a.m. and was centered at around 60 kilometers southwest of Sinabang, Aceh, at 24 kilometers beneath the surface.
Antara state news agency reported panic stirred among residents in Banda Aceh, Medan and Riau and also blackouts in Banda Aceh.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
BMKG also recorded two aftershocks, each measuring 5.1 and 5.2 on the Richter scale, at 5:26 and 5:28 a.m..
Moderate quakes have often rock the Aceh province , which was the worst hit area when the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck.
