Timor-Leste Want Housemaid Send to Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur - East Timor Indonesia would follow as a supplier of domestic servants (PRT) for Malaysia. Government of Timor-Leste is currently exploring the possibility of sending domestic workers to the country's neighbor.

This was conveyed by Ambassador (Ambassador) of Timor Leste to Malaysia, Juvencio Da Jesus Martins as reported by Bernama news agency on Friday (22/1/2010).

It is said Martins, a manpower company in Kuala Lumpur recently to meet with him and proposed to send domestic workers from East Timor to Malaysia. Because the demand for foreign domestic workers are high in Malaysia.

Martins said, he would convey the proposal to the government of Timor Leste. "This requires the approval of the two governments. I will discuss this issue with my government and if there is a green light from Dili, we will try to discuss this matter with the Malaysian government," said Martins.

"If we can get all the approvals, Malaysia will become the first country to our servants who go abroad," said Martins.

According to Martins, this issue was first raised in 2005 in talks between Minister of Foreign Affairs (Foreign Minister) of East Timor at that time what is now the President, Jose Manuel Ramos-Horta, the former Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar on the possibility of sending some 10,000 domestic workers to Malaysia.

"But after that there was no progress on that. But I think this issue is still relevant because the demand for servants in this country are still high, especially from non-Muslim family," said Martins.

Malaysia currently employs approximately 320 thousand foreign domestic workers are legal. Most came from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Cambodia and Thailand.
