Police arrest man in bank scam

The police said Friday they have arrested one man but are continuing their investigation into the recent bank scam that took money from customers’ personal accounts.

The National Police's chief detective Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi told reporters that the police has arrested one man, identified only by his initials F, who he said was an old hand at such scams.

Ito said the police were now taking the suspect to a region as they wished to question him to get information from him to further their investigation.

“We are hoping to have new developments in one or two days,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.

Ito said the scammers stole account details and PIN numbers from the ATM as cardholders were using the machine, and then produced fake cards to steal money from the accounts.

He said that the police had yet to find any indication that foreign nationals were involved in the crime.

Bank Indonesia said that the predicted amount of missing savings at the banks had increased to Rp 5 billion (US$550,000) from the Rp 4.1 billion initially estimated.
