KPK questions witness over attempts to frame its leaders

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigators questioned on Monday witness Ary Muladi in connection with businessman Anggodo Widjojo's attempt last year to frame two KPK leaders.

Ary’s lawyer Sugeng Teguh Santoso said his client would disclose a number of facts concerning Anggodo’s plot to frame KPK deputy chiefs Bibit Waluyo and Chandra M. Hamzah. Sugeng said the move was aimed at disrupting a KPK investigation into corruption within the Forestry Ministry's integrated radio communication system. Anggodo’s brother Anggoro Widjojo was implicated in the investigation.

“Today [Ary] will be questioned as witness and reveal how Anggodo and his advisers framed Bibit and Chandra,” Sugeng was quoted by kompas.com.

The police accused Bibit and Chandra of extorting and accepting bribes from Anggodo through Ary last year. During police questioning, however, Ary retracted his previous account, saying he never gave the money to the two KPK leaders. He maintains the money went to another case broker identified as Yulianto, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

A presidential fact finding team concluded that the case involving Bibit and Chandra was fabricated.

KPK has named Anggodo as a suspect for alleged conspiracy to conduct graft and attempts to obstruct an investigation.
