Elephant escapes from circus area, tramples girl




A tamed elephant has escaped from a circus arena in Kumpeh Kasang village in the Jambi regency of Muarojambi, injuring a 10-year-old girl, Antara state news agency reported on Monday.

Spokesman for the Jambi police Adj. Sr. Comr. Alhansyah said the elephant stepped on Maya, breaking the young spectator's left leg.

Another spectator was sustained slight injurires after he fell to the ground during the commotion, Alhansyah added.

The two victims were admitted to Raden Mataher Hospital in Jambi city.

The escape stirred panic among the crowd which was packed into the arena on Sunday.

An elephant tamer eventually managed to appease the giant mammal and drive it back to its cage.

Alhansyah said police had questioned circus organizer Ratna Nasution and banned the entertainment program until safety improvements were made.
