Century committee members too tired to meet with depositors

Many depositors of the then Bank Century have been trying in vain to reclaim their money, but members of the House of Representatives’ inquiry committee into the bank bailout do not have time to listen to their grievances.

Some of the depositors went to the House building to meet the committee, but only committee deputy chairman Gayus Lumbuun welcomed them on Tuesday.

"[The committee members] are too tired after the intense inquiries of the last few days. So, all of them decided to appoint me as their representative," Gayus of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) told the depositors.

During the meeting, the coordinator of the depositors, Z. Siput L., asked the committee to protect and fight for their rights and to reveal the irregularities plaguing the bank that had caused them to lose their money.

Bank Century owner Robert Tantular was sentenced to four years in prison for the scam that led to its collapse. The bank received Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million) in bailout funds in November 2008.
