How Deeply SBY Focuses on Gayus Case




Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here Monday chaired a limited cabinet meeting to discuss matters related to former tax official Gayus Tambunan.

At the meeting that was also attended by Vice President Boediono, the president was to receive reports on the latest developments in the legal process against tax fraud and corruption defendant Gayus Tambunan from Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto, National Police Chief General Timur Pradopo, Attorney General Basrief Arief, and Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar.

"In the cabinet meeting, I will ask the concerned officials to report and explain the legal measures which have been taken, what has and what has not been achieved , what problems and challenges are being faced, and how to address the problems," the president said.

Yudhoyono said on his view, the public had not yet received sufficient explanations on the legal process against Gayus Tambunan. The explanation to the public should be carried out effectively so that the public could follow the legal measures taken by the authorities on the Gayus case.

The president stated that the case must be given special attention and handled very seriously because the case has involved various misconducts, such as court crimes, tax mafia, and immigration crimes.

He said that he would not intervene the legal process, but as the head of state he would still be involved in the case handling by making sure that all legal enforcement institutions and knots under his authorities work properly and effectively.

"I know the limit when I have to respect and when I have to personally handle it for good intention, such as when there was a controversy regarding Bibit Chandra case," he said.

Gayus Tambunan, a low-level dodgy tax official, was arrested in Singapore in March 2010 on the tax evasion fraud involving big companies.
