Toyota to Restart Exports of Indonesian-Built SUVs

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - Toyota Motor Corp. will in August resume exports to the Middle East and the Philippines of Fortuna sport utility vehicles made at its Indonesian plant in response to a sharp recovery in demand, The Nikkei reported in its Sunday edition, citing company sources.

Toyota began to ship the vehicle from Indonesia to Persian Gulf states and the Philippines in 2006, but it halted the shipments after auto demand fell sharply in the wake of the global financial crisis starting in the autumn of 2008. It plans to ship 10,000 SUVs to these countries annually, beginning in August.

The carmaker turned out roughly 10,000 of the vehicles in Indonesia last year, temporarily consigning all production for export to its factory in Thailand. Toyota decided to resume production of the Fortuna for export at the plants in both Thailand and Indonesia, having determined that global demand has recovered sufficiently.

Toyota's unit sales jumped 39% on the year in Asia, excluding Japan, in the first five months of this year, posting significantly higher growth than in other regions.
