Indonesia's Latest Quake Map Completed

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - The National Team of Indonesian Quake Map has just completed its latest quake map which will be explained at the Presidential Palace on Friday. Led by earthquake expert Prof Masyhur Irsyam, a nine-member team has arranged the brand new map of earthquakes in Indonesia.

"The new map on earthquakes will be presented before disaster management-related officials at the Presidential Palace on Friday," presidential special staff for disasters and social assistance affairs Erick Ridzky said here on Thursday. The quake map, called "Probable Seismic Hazard Analysis" map, has been officially introduced since it was signed by Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanta on July 1, 2010.

Erick explained that the arrangement of the latest quake map was based on the records of earthquakes in various areas across the country. He said the map contains detailed information about active faults in the earth at various areas in Indonesia.

"The team of nine has mapped the active faults in Sumatra and gives detailed information about other active faults on Java island namely in Cimandi, Lembang, Opak, Lasen, and Pati," Erick said.

But he added that the team of nine still said that the map still has its shortcomings. According to the team, there are still other active faults whose shear rate, repeated periods, and maximum magnitudes can be identified geologically.

Besides, possible other active faults near Jakarta and Surabaya had yet to be identified as well. But compared with the quake map which was arranged in 2002, the latest one contains much more information about earthquakes and active faults as initial references to reduce the disasters.

"We agreed to continue making systematic maps of earthquakes and renew the maps periodically as has been done by quake prone countries as Japan," Erick said.
