Indonesia Parliament to Continue Assessing Central Bank Candidate

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - Indonesia's parliament will continue its assessment of the candidacy for the position of central bank governor July 22, senior lawmaker Achsanul Qasasih said Wednesday. Qasasih, deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee that oversees the central bank, did not say when a decision will be made.

The top job at the central bank has been vacant for a year since former governor Boediono teamed up with incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in last year's presidential election.

Bank Indonesia's Senior Deputy Governor Darmin Nasution, the sole candidate for the central bank governor position, was questioned by the parliamentary commission for around eight hours Wednesday. The parliament conducts the so-called fit-and-proper test before it decides whether to approve or reject candidacies for top posts.
