Naval Ships Search for Indonesians in Malacca Strait




Jakarta (News Today) - The Indonesian Navy has deployed four of its ships in the Malacca Strait to assist in search and rescue (SAR) efforts following the sinking of a civilian vessel with Indonesian citizens aboard in waters near Port Dickson, Malaysia, on Tuesday morning (June 22). Chief of the Indonesian Navy’s Western Fleet Command Rear Admiral Marsetio said the four battleships were actually taking part in a routine operation codenamed "Arung Pari."

He said so far none of the four naval ships had found any of the people from the ill-fated boat but the command was maintaining its coordination with Malaysian marine authorities regarding the shipwreck. It was previously reported one of the people who had been on the MV Kota Raya was found dead and 14 others were still missing.

The transportation attache at the Indonesian embassy in Kuala Lumpur , Sahar Andika Putram , said there was no information on the victims or survivors from the sinking of the trawler-like vessel. According to Malaysian online media, the vessel was carrying 22 people and seven of them had survived.

A Malaysian rescue teams had found the body of a seven-year-old female passenger floating in the sea. According to Port Dickson Police chief Baljet Singh the seven survivors consisted of two female and five male passengers. One of the women was pregnant.
