Pasar Ular vendors not worried about relocation plan

(News Terupdate) - Vendors in North Jakarta’s famed Pasar Ular (Snake Market) are paying no heed to the government’s plan to relocate them.

“I am not worried now that my permit has been renewed,” Alamsyah, a market vendor told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Permits for some 200 traders in the Plumpang Koja district, are issued by the city’s trade agency.

Another trader said the relocation issue had been around since the 1990s.

“Many parties are trying to take advantage of the issue,” Baron said.

Vendor Ari Wibowo, who has been selling shoes at the market for more than ten years, considered the plan a mere rumor.

“This market is a competitor to the nearby malls,” Ari said, mentioning Koja Trade Mall and Kelapa Gading Mall as examples.

It seems the traders are being wooed by self-serving parties who want them to move into their fold.

Ubaidillah from the market management team said the administration would relocate the market sooner or later for reasons of city improvement.

However, he said he believed the government would inform the vendors first, since they were the legal operators as proved by their permits. Besides which, the market had become an important trade centre in North Jakarta, he said.
