Golkar wants coalition to last until 2014

(News Terupdate) - The Golkar Party wants to maintain a coalition to support the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono until 2014, despite the controversy over the Bank Century bailout that has led them to a head-on collision.

Golkar deputy chairman Priyo Budi Santoso said Saturday Yudhoyono and the party’s chairman, Aburizal Bakrie, had reached an agreement during their latest meeting to preserve the coalition until the end of the President’s tenure in 2014.

“Pak Aburizal and Pak Yudhoyono have emotional ties. The two often communicate with each other,” Priyo said.

Priyo added that Golkar would continue searching for evidence of irregularities in the Bank Century bailout, despite a Cabinet reshuffle threat.

Aburizal had summoned three Golkar’s Cabinet members and asked them to be prepared for the reshuffle, which Priyo said was the worst-case scenario..

“The three ministers agreed [to the request],” Priyo said, referring to Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare Agung Laksono, Fishery and Maritime Affairs Minister Fadel Muhammad and Industry Minister Mohammad S. Hidayat.

Priyo underlined that Golkar did not deem Cabinet reshuffle a threat as it was the President’s prerogative.
