Freddy Krueger kills weekend box office

(News Terupdate) - It was a good weekend for Freddy Krueger. The 1980s horror villain is back with a vengeance, with "The Nightmare on Elm Street" remake earning a solid $32 million, landing it in first place at the box office this weekend.

Still, even with the success of "Nightmare" -- which stars Jackie Earle Haley as the disfigured madman who kills teenagers in their dreams -- this weekend's box office still couldn't trump last year's total in early May, when "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" grossed a boffo $85 million. (Of course, Hollywood will likely make up for it next weekend, when Robert Downey Jr. dons the Iron Man suit once again; the film is already hitting across the season, where its opened in 53 territories this past weekend, taking in $100.2 million)

And though "Nightmare" earned $32 million, the film fell steeply between Friday and Saturday night, and earned a C+ Cinemascore, which suggests that the film hasn't been very well received by audiences.

Second place for the weekend belonged to "How to Train Your Dragon," which, once again, held in remarkably well. The PG-rated 3-D flick grossed an estimated $10.8 million, down only 29 percent since last weekend. Its total gross now stands at $192.3 million.

The Steve Carell, Tina Fey-starrer "Date Night" fell only 27 percent, collecting an additional $7.6 million. The PG-13 comedy has now grossed $73.6 million. Not bad for two television stars, huh?

Despite a weak opening, "The Back-Up Plan" held on fairly well its second weekend in theaters. Falling 41 percent, Jennifer Lopez's romantic comedy grossed an additional $7.2 million to put the film's two-week total at $22.9 million.

Fifth place for the three-day period went to the other newcomer of the weekend, "Furry Vengeance." The PG-rated family film earned only $6.5 million but scored a B+ with audiences. The Brendan Fraser-starrer is unlikely to do much business going forward, but considering its a co-production between Summit Entertainment and Participant Pictures, its unlikely the film's disappointment will hurt either company much.

Sixth place went to "The Losers." The film -- which disappointed in its opening weekend -- fell 36 percent its second weekend in theaters, grossing an additional $6 million. The Jeffrey Dean Morgan-Zoe Saldana action flick has collected just $18 million after ten days in release.

"Clash of the Titans" took the seventh spot, earning an estimated $5.9 million, putting its total gross at $154 million.

"Kick-Ass" earned another $4.4 million in its third weekend of release, landing an eighth place finish. The R-rated film continues to fall steeply -- it dropped 52 percent, but has grossed a total of $42 million.

"Death at a Funeral" -- which took in $4 million -- and Disney's "Oceans" documentary, which raked in $2.6 million, rounded out the top ten. The R-rated Chris Rock comedy lost 50 percent of its value since last weekend, and, in three weeks of release, has grossed $34.7 million. Disney's doc dropped 57 percent, earning a cume of $13.5 million.

In limited release, the latest Nicole Holofcener drama "Please Give" grossed an impressive $128,696 in five theaters for a strong per-screen average of $25,000. IFC's disturbing horror flick "Human Centipede" only opened on one screen and earned $12,400 for the frame. Check back next weekend when we discover whether "Iron Man 2" will break box office records.

Latest James Bond film on hold

Los Angeles, California (News Terupdate) - The big-screen adventures of James Bond are on hold because of the financial woes of MGM, the studio that distributes the movies, producers said.

The 23rd Bond film was in pre-production for a release next year.

"Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on BOND 23 indefinitely," producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a joint statement. "We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of BOND 23."

MGM has been on the brink of bankruptcy as it works with creditors to find a new owner.

The James Bond series is the longest-running film franchise in history, with the first movie about the world's most famous fictional spy -- "Dr. No" -- released in 1962.

The movie franchise and merchandising are controlled by EON Productions. Wilson and Broccoli took over the 007 franchise from Albert "Cubby" Broccoli in 1995.

Lady Antebellum dominates ACM Awards

(News Terupdate) - Nashville joined hands with Vegas Sunday night for the 45th Academy of Country Music Awards -- where comedy was often king and Lady Antebellum was crowned queen.

"We've had a great year in country music," declared host Reba McEntire from the stage of the capacity-filled MGM Grand Garden Arena. "Lots of songs about cowboy Casanovas, white liars and two-timin' men -- and I'd like to thank Jesse James and Tiger Woods for inspiring us all."

While the men may have inspired, in the course of the three-hour, performance-heavy evening it was the women who commanded the spotlight -- starting with an opening act comprised of this year's (and last year's) entertainer of the year Carrie Underwood and eventual double winner Miranda Lambert, and culminating with multiple winner Lady Antebellum, who in fact are the co-ed trio of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood.

In all, Lady A took home three awards, for song of the year, single of the year and vocal group. Brad Paisley was named male vocalist of the year, while Miranda Lambert won as female vocalist and for album of the year. Underwood's honor is unprecedented, as she is now the first woman to win two entertainer of the year awards.

During her acceptance speech, she said her cell phone was ringing.

Brad Needs Matt's Shirt

In a night aglow with body glitter and many spray tans, guest presenter Matthew McConaughey gifted Underwood with a pair of boots -- in answer to a request she made at last year's ceremony. He also delivered the male vocalist award to Brad Paisley, who was still wet from having just performed his number "Water."

"Can I borrow you shirt?" Paisley asked the actor. "You're used to not wearing one."

While presenting McConaughey also said, "After the show last year, my lady and I, Camila, we went back to the hotel and conceived the little lady that is now our daughter, Vida Alves McConaughey ... I promise you, me and Camila are not going to try and get so lucky this year."

Lady A's Fans

In accepting the first major award of the night, song of the year for "Need You Now," Lady Antebellum's Scott thanked the group's families and gave a shout out to "the fans -- thank you!"

Despite Lady A's early monopoly on the evening, their self-titled CD was not named album of the year. That distinction went to Miranda Lambert, for her "Revolution." After wooing her producers, Frank Liddell and Mike Wrucke to join her onstage, Lambert said, "This music is what I do. It's the only thing I live for. Thanks for loving it, really ... changed my life."

Lambert previously won the album prize in 2007, for her "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend."

When she was announced (by Josh Duhamel) to be female vocalist the year, Lambert first embraced Carrie Underwood in the audience, then went up to the stage microphone and said, "You've got to be kidding me."

Came time for the winner of vocal group of the year, Lady Antebellum returned to the stage and this time Haywood spoke, thanking God and the folks back in Augusta, Georgia. "It is an honor to be part of the best genre in the world," he said.

Carrie's Triple Crown

Before Underwood was again named entertainer of the year, Reba McEntire presented her an award and noted the "American Idol" winner was part of an elite group of artists who were also named top new artist and top vocalist. "The Academy calls that the Triple Crown," said McEntire.

Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry were honored for their humanitarian work. A breathless Gentry spoke movingly about the work that other country stars had done, as Montgomery wiped tears from his eyes. "This is a very humbling moment" said Gentry, while Montgomery told the audience, "This is the greatest country in the world, baby."

Equally overcome with emotion, top new artist -- as decided by the fans -- Luke Bryan quickly rattled off the names of those he wanted to thank after first saying, "It's impossible for a human to shake more than [I am] now." Among those he acknowledged were his "beautiful wife Caroline," his parents and his hometown of Leesburg, Georgia. He also looked upward and thanked his late brother and sister, Chris and Kelly, for having a hand in his award.

Top vocal duo winners Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn -- Brooks & Dunn -- delivered their last-ever ACM performance, "My Maria," a song choice from fans voting online. Last August, the two announced that their 2010 tour, "The Last Rodeo," would bring down the curtain on their act, and after 20 years together they would go their separate ways.

'Dragon' kicks 'Kick-Ass' to box office curb

(News Terupdate) - If only "Kick-Ass" had been in 3-D maybe we would have had a different outcome. But instead, the DreamWorks Animated 3-D flick "How to Train Your Dragon" squeezed out a surprise come-from-behind first-place finish with an estimated $20 million take in its fourth weekend in release.

Falling only 20 percent, "Dragon's" total now stands at $158.6 million; a dearth of competing kids' movies has been beneficial to the well-reviewed Viking flick.

Lionsgate's "Kick-Ass" grossed an estimated $19.75 million for a second place spot. (With estimates showing spots one and two separated by a remarkably small $250,000, Monday's final results may give us a different outcome.) In 3,065 theaters, "Kick-Ass" averaged $6,445, not a bad debut for a film that only cost $28 million to make, but not reaching the high expectations for the film, which has been gathering buzz among the fan boys for the last month.

In fact, the movie only generated a B from Cinemascore, suggesting that some audiences aren't quite getting director Matthew Vaughn's irreverent take on the superhero genre. The R rating may have also depressed the film's box office, keeping its core fan base of teen boys out of the ticket lines.

Third place belonged to holdover "Date Night," which grossed $17.3 million, or only a 31 percent drop -- quite strong for a comedy that generated middling reviews when it opened last weekend. The PG-13 rated flick from director Shawn Levy ("Night at the Museum") has now grossed close to $50 million after ten days of release.

Chris Rock's R-rated comedy "Death at a Funeral" grossed an estimated $16.4 million. The remake of the 2007 British film of the same name bowed to strong reviews, and a B+ Cinemascore, so perhaps it will hold strong in coming weeks. From director Neil LaBute, "Death" only cost $21 million to make and generated the highest per-screen average in the top ten with $6,913.

Spot five went to "Clash of the Titans," which grossed an additional $15.7 million. The movie fell 41 percent in its third week of release, and its gross now stands at $133 million.

"The Last Song" took 6th place with $5.8 million, bringng its total to around $50 million, while "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too" earned 7th spot with $4.1 million and a total of $54.8 million.

"Hot Tub Time Machine" is hanging in there, neck-and-neck with "Alice in Wonderland" for 8th. Both films have grossed around $3.5 million for the weekend. For "Hot Tub," it was a drop of just 35 percent in its fourth week of release, raising its gross to $42.5 million.

"Alice," in its seventh weekend, has now earned an impressive $324 million.

"The Bounty Hunter" rounds out the top 10; the Jennifer Aniston-Gerard Butler starrer has now earned $60 million after adding another $3.2 million in its fifth weekend of release.

Tea Party battles for 'soul of this country'

(News Terupdate) - As Tax Day approaches, Tea Party activists are uniting to voice the message they've been honing for more than a year: It's time to reduce the size of government, honor the Constitution and return to fiscal responsibility in Washington.

The Tea Party Express' third cross-country tour brings activists to Boston, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, before culminating with an anti-tax rally at the nation's capital on Thursday.

The "Just Vote Them Out!" tour has weaved through areas represented by vulnerable Democrats, bringing thousands to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's hometown in Nevada on its opening day. The tour's other top target -- Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan -- announced his retirement the same day the tour was in his turf.

Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin was the top draw at the Boston event. Republican Sen. Scott Brown, whose winning Massachusetts campaign was infused by the Tea Party, turned down his invitation to the event, although his office said he wished the rally success.

So far, the movement's success is in the eye of the beholder.

Tea Party activists running for office have yet to make much impact in the Republican primaries, and Stupak rejected the notion that the Tea Party played a role in his decision to step down.

Tea Party changes tone, not outcome of Texas primary

But House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer admitted Tuesday that the protests and rallies by the Tea Party across the country are having an impact on lawmakers' decisions about running for another term.

"Do I think that negative atmosphere that's been created by the Tea Party and by others certainly goes into the thinking of members? I think it does. I think you honestly have to point out that it does," Hoyer said.

Hoyer: Tea Party having an impact

The Tea Party developed last year in protest to what its supporters saw as overspending in Washington -- by Republicans and Democrats -- following the stimulus bill, the bank bailouts and President Obama's budget.

Fueled by anger at the government and fear of where the country was headed, it grew from dozens to hundreds of loosely linked groups.

Until recently, there had been little movement toward coalescing as a formal party.

Last week, a broad coalition of national and regional Tea Party groups announced the formation of the National Tea Party Federation.

Tea Party movement attempts to unite?

Tom De Luca, a professor of political science at Fordham University, said while Tea Party activists have affected the national agenda, the larger impact has been on the Republican Party.

"It's energized the hardcore base of Republicans who tend to share a lot of Tea Party ideas, but on the other hand, it's going to bring to the floor a split that has been in the Republican Party for quite a long time," De Luca said.

That split pits the more conservative elements of the party against moderate Republicans. At the Southern Republican Leadership Conference last weekend, a Tea Party member voiced a concern to former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum that the moderate Republicans -- and not conservatives -- would end up on the ballot in November.

"Go beat them," he told the attendee. "That's what elections are all about. I encourage candidates to run," Santorum said, adding the GOP must focus its energy on electing conservative candidates in the Republican primaries.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minnesota, said last week that the Republican Party and the Tea Party are in the process of merging.

Bachmann: GOP and Tea Party movement are 'merging'

If the Tea Party pushes Republicans further to the right, however, it could hurt them in November, De Luca noted. Centrist voters would likely favor a Democrat over a far-right Republican, he said.

Republican Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour pleaded with conservatives at the conference to stick together as the elections near.

"The Democrats' fondest hope is to see Tea Party or other conservatives split off and have a third party to split the conservative vote," he said. "We can't let that happen. We've got to stay unified."

De Luca said the Republican Party now finds itself trying to navigate the movement.

"They want to incorporate it to the degree they can without hurting the party's chances," he said.

As for Tea Party members, they want to hold lawmakers' feet to the fire without being swallowed up by a party some fear is trying to Astroturf their grassroots movement.

"I got more knife wounds in my back from Republican operatives than Democrats could ever do," said Mark Williams, chairman of the Tea Party Express III tour. "The Democrats at least stand there and tell me they hate me, and tell me that they hate America. These Republicans smile at me, shake my hand and then stab me in the back."

The Tea Party Express is run from the same building as a Republican political consulting firm.

Joe Wierzbicki, who coordinates the Tea Party Express, told CNN earlier this year that the people who run the movement "need a major political party."

"I think what you'll find is at Tea Party rallies, a lot of those people who are mad at the Republican Party, many of them are Republicans themselves. Us included," he said.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll conducted earlier this year indicates Tea Party activists would vote overwhelmingly Republican in a two-party race for Congress.

The poll also found that activists in the Tea Party movement tend to be male, upscale and overwhelmingly conservative. Roughly 11 percent of all Americans say they have actively supported the Tea Party movement. Of this core group of activists, half live in rural areas.

"It seems to have captured the attention of a certain, very large and important segment, but still -- a certain segment of society," De Luca said. "Its lasting power is someone questionable."

What remains to be seen is how closely the movement allies itself with the GOP, to what extent the various Tea Party groups come together as a formal organization and whether the activists solidify around a more coherent message removed from vitriolic embellishments and not grounded in fear, De Luca said.

"What will happen to them if the economy improves? What will happen to them if the health care plan starts to work? What happens to this extreme message if things turn in ways that no longer enflame all of these doubts many people have about who they are as Americans, but starts to reassure them that America is moving in a better direction?" he asked.

But at least for now, the movement's focus remains on cleaning house, Williams said.

"We're in a war for the soul of this country," he said. "We need to purge both parties. We need to purge the Democrats of the Marxists and the Republicans of the weaklings."

Cousins questioned in Haleigh search

(News Terupdate) - Acting on a lead, authorities were searching an area near Satsuma, Florida, for a second day Wednesday as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings.

"The Putnam County Sheriff's Office has started the second day of a search in the waterway and woods in the Satsuma area," sheriff's spokesman Lt. Johnny Greenwood said in a statement.

"This area is being searched as the result of one of the many leads received thus far in this case. It can be reported that as the result of yesterday's search, the status of this investigation has not changed."

The sheriff's office denied Wednesday afternoon that it has anyone in custody in connection with the investigation.

Deputies from four counties and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement began searching the St. Johns River south of Satsuma on Tuesday morning, CNN affiliate WJXT-TV in Jacksonville reported. The search lasted until about 8 p.m. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials told the station nothing was found.

In addition, Sheriff Jeff Hardy told WJXT that he met with Haleigh's family earlier Tuesday but would not divulge what was discussed.

"We're going to continue this investigation until we can bring it to a logical conclusion," he said

Authorities said the purpose of the meeting was to update relatives on the status of the investigation and inform them of the search.

"Sheriff Hardy would like Haleigh Cummings' family, the citizens of Putnam County and the media to know, if and when any factual information is obtained in this case that will either explain what happened to Haleigh Cummings or identify who is responsible for her disappearance, he will make a formal release to the public," Greenwood said Wednesday.

Haleigh was 5 when she disappeared February 9, 2009, from the Satsuma mobile home where she lived with her father, Ronald Cummings, and his girlfriend at the time, Misty Croslin. Croslin later married Cummings, but the couple has since split.

Cummings called police and reported Haleigh missing when he returned from work at dawn.

Croslin told police she tucked Haleigh and her 4-year-old brother into bed about 8 p.m. and went to sleep two hours later. She said she awoke at 3 a.m. to find Haleigh missing and a cinder block propping open a back door.

An attorney representing Joe Overstreet, Croslin's cousin, said Florida officials questioned his client Tuesday.

Overstreet is from Nashville, Tennessee, but was in the Satsuma area when Haleigh disappeared, said attorney Shawn Sigo. Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents flew into Nashville on Tuesday to question him, Sigo said.

Overstreet maintains he had nothing to do with Haleigh's disappearance, Sigo said, adding that he is "broken over this" and "knows he is being used by people whose story keeps changing."

Putnam County authorities said in August that "the evidence and investigatory effort has minimized the likelihood that Haleigh's disappearance is the work of a stranger." Police have said Cummings and Crystal Sheffield, the girl's mother, are not considered suspects.

Jail records show that Croslin was removed from the St. Johns County Jail, where she is being held on suspicion of drug trafficking, for a short time Tuesday, WJXT said. The sheriff told the station she was brought to Putnam County for an interview.

Investigators have said they believe Croslin "continues to hold important answers in the case" but has not provided "any sort of detailed accounting of the hours during the late evening and early morning of Haleigh's disappearance." Authorities have said physical evidence contradicts Croslin's account of the events that night.

However, police have stopped short of naming Croslin a suspect in the case. In televised interviews, Croslin has said she does not know what happened to Haleigh but believes "the other side of the family" knows where she is.

Croslin and Cummings were both arrested in January along with three others after allegedly selling about $3,900 worth of drugs to undercover officers, authorities said.

After their arrests, Greenwood said, "Even though these are totally separate, they are parallel cases, and there's no doubt in my mind these cases will cross someday. I hope that somewhere through this, the investigators in the Haleigh case will find the information they need."
